| Is this like mindmapping?
Mindmapping is one form of capturing dialogue. It is one of many templates for organizing information which we teach. Graphic language includes mindmapping but is not limited to it. Mindmapping is useful for showing a lot of detail and relationships but is not the ideal tool for all stages of planning and task responsibility or overview.
Absolutely not. We break all of our practices down into very simple steps, similar to learning the alphabet. The key to being able to use visual language as a live communication tool is to keep it simple. This allows you to use visuals as you would underline or highlight an idea.
Handdrawn maps are flexible and can be adjusted on the spot to reflect the flow of dialogue. Often an agenda changes, immediate issues need to be addressed and flexibility is key to reflecting the needs of the group. Participants tend to contribute ideas, share in finding solutions when they see their comments included in a group map. The framework is spacious and invites participation. A pre-set chart may be useful for sharing background information, research results and data which is already established. However, in its slickness, it implies completion and finalitythe opposite of inviting comments and interaction. Each media has its place and can interact with each other so that the strengths of each is maximized.
For the last twelve years, we have had "open-enrollment sessions" throughout the U.S. and recently also in England. We have discontinued our U.S.open enrollment sessions in order to better focus our work with our corporate clients. We have found that the graphic language work grows most effectively when groups and teams of trainers/facilitators learn the skills and are able to internally support the useage in their organizations. For information on sessions in the U.K., contact 100763.2403@compuserve.com for details and dates of open sessions. If you do have a group that is interested in a session, please let us know and we would be happy to connect you with other interested people in your area. If you are interested in hosting a session and opening it to addirtional participants, we would be glad to help.
We have done sessions of varying length particularly for conference presentations. This is an excellent way to open the door and get a starting exposure to the power of visual language. Our only warning to you is: We are consistently the favorite break out session and everyone wants more! We are interested in sharing skills which people are able to use immediately. We are sure to balance the time investment with a wildly successful output in directly applicable skills.
We have worked with a huge diversity of industries including engineering, high tech, pharmaceutical, insurance and banking. In every case, participants are thrilled to see the increase in efficiency of group process, cutting down on meeting time, and increase in making information memorable. Ask people how they solve problems, and you will find many draw a sketch or make a quick diagram. Over 80% of the population are primarily visual thinkers and are receptive to using highly effective visual communication tools. |
